First of all, let’s answer the question that's probably on everyone's mind. Who's Bernie? Named for the founding father of Safari Ltd, Bernard Rubel, Bernie is our lovable Spokesgator. He is the face and the spirit of the company and encompasses everything we love. From nature conservation to Toys That Teach and everything in between, Bernie is a fan of it all. But how, you may ask, did he get started? Well, let us tell you!
Bernie, From the Beginning
It was 1921, and our friend Bernie was curiously living in the German countryside. How he got there, no one is quite sure, as that is not your typical gator habitat, but there he was. As he grew, so did his imagination and curiosity. While he could have spent his whole life in Germany, Bernie knew that was not the life for him; he wanted to see the world! So, what does a gator with a taste for adventure do? Well, he hopped on a ship and sailed across the ocean to see the sites in a new place, and that place was New York City. Bernie soon found that city life was not for him; there was far too much concrete. He had read about a place filled with wetlands and swamps which just happened to be called the “Home of the Alligator.” Now when you are an alligator, it doesn’t get much better than the “Home of the Alligator” so Bernie thought that he would head south to this place of legend: the South Florida Everglades.
Bernie settled into the Everglades right away and found many friends; he knew this was where he would stay. His new friends shared stories of their ancestors being hunted almost to the point of extinction, and how a few brave humans saved them and were fighting to protect Bernie’s new home. The human’s fight had a name; it was called conservation. Bernie knew right away that this was what he was meant to do. As he embarked on his journey to protect other animals around the world, he met and fell in love with his alligator wife, Rosemarie, who luckily shared his passion and love for wildlife. Together they traveled the world, sharing their love of conservation and animals with their new friends and also with their children.
However, there was one more thing that they wanted to do. You see, Bernie and Rosemarie realized that children are the key to saving our planet in the future. They understood that if they could teach a child to love the earth and animals as much as they did, then that child could grow up to be an adult who loved the earth and animals and could be a force for amazing change in the world. For this reason, they started Safari Ltd to help educate children about conservation. Their spirit and passion still lives on today in every toy we create and every effort to support conservation.
